Finding Bright Spots

Do you pay attention to the bright spots of your day?

Can you recall the moments, big or small, that happen in your day that bring you joy, make you smile, give you a feeling of success?

In the busyness of life, we often overlook those small wins of the day. When things feel overwhelming, and nothing is going right, it can be even more difficult to find the littlest positive thing that happened. Our brains are wired to look for problems and potential threats. When this happens, we tend to overlook positive experiences and we fall into a negative loop: everything sucks, I can’t win, nothing is going right…

It doesn’t have to be this way!

By focusing on the bright spots in your day, you rewire your brain to see opportunities and build a positive outlook. Celebrating small successes triggers the release of dopamine—a feel-good neurotransmitter—leading to increased motivation, productivity, and resilience. Acknowledging bright spots boosts your self-confidence, and trains your brain to look for the positive moments, wins, and successes.

There are many ways to begin training your brain; here are a few to get you started:

Start being present and pay attention to the things that happen during your day. Focusing on the present brings awareness of the little joys and accomplishments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Whenever you encounter a setback, try to find the silver lining. Ask yourself, “What did I learn from this experience?” or “What positive outcome can I derive from this situation?” Shifting your perspective will uncover bright spots even in challenging circumstances. Sometimes, it’s more about learning what NOT to do in certain situations and that in and of itself can be perceived as a win.

Have an attitude of gratitude. Begin using a journal or tracking system and take a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you are thankful for. Gratitude helps you recognize the blessings and successes that might have slipped your attention.

At the same time, take a few minutes to reflect on your day and identify moments that made you feel proud, happy, or accomplished. These could be anything from completing a task ahead of time to receiving positive feedback from a colleague.

Talk about your daily achievements with friends, family, or coworkers. Verbalizing your successes reinforces their importance and encourages you (and possible them as well) to seek out more bright spots.

To help you cultivate the habit of tracking your daily successes, we use a Bright Spots Tracker spreadsheet. This user-friendly tracker was created by my friends at Precision Nutrition, and allows you o record your small wins, jot down brief notes about each success, and track your progress over time. By regularly using this tracker, you can witness the accumulation of daily accomplishments and further develop a positive mindset.

Embrace the habit of tracking your small wins, and watch as your positivity, motivation, and overall success soar to new heights.
