Back to School Wellness Ideas for Keeping School Year Germs Away

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: back to school!

As the school year kicks into gear, parents find themselves in the midst of a familiar challenge: keeping themselves and their children healthy. With the return to crowded classrooms and busy hallways, it’s only natural to worry about those pesky germs that often accompany the back-to-school season. Taking care of yourself is just as important as caring for your kids. In this blog post, we’ll explore wellness ideas for keeping school year germs away; simple, everyday steps and practical strategies you can take to boost your family’s immune system and help protect them from illness. Maintaining your wellbeing is key to a happy, healthy, and productive school year for your kids!

Here are some simple ways you and your family can stay healthy and well during the busy school year:

  • Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, so it’s essential to get enough restorative sleep every night. Experiment with an earlier bed time during the week. Work backward from the time you need to get up and set your bedtime forward 7 or 8 hours. For example, if 5:00 am is the time you must get up, your bedtime should be at least 9:00 pm. Begin your sleep routine 30 minutes earlier to allow time to fall asleep.
  • Eating a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can provide essential vitamins and minerals that can help support your immune system. The more you incorporate nutrient rich foods into your (and your family’s) diets, the more energy you’ll have for the demands of the day. You’ll also likely prevent food cravings later in the day.
  • Drinking plenty of water: Staying hydrated can help flush out toxins and keep your immune system functioning properly. Make sure you and your kids have water bottles packed for the day and continue to refill them throughout the day. Water is great source for giving your body a boost: if you find yourself in a slump and you feel like you could fall asleep at your desk, drink some water (I promise, it’ll help)!
  • Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can help boost your immune system by improving circulation, reducing stress, and promoting the production of immune-boosting cells. Daily movement is essential for your wellbeing in terms of feeling energized at the end of a long day. Step away from your desk for a quick walk when you can; even just 10 minutes is enough to provide a boost of energy!
  • Managing stress: Chronic stress can weaken your immune system, so it’s important to find healthy ways to manage stress, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga. There are many apps you can add to your phone for breathing exercises and guided meditation; free yoga flows can be found on Youtube.
  • *Taking immune-boosting supplements: Supplements like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and echinacea may help boost your immune system, but be sure to speak with a healthcare professional before taking any supplements.
  • *Using herbs and spices: Certain herbs and spices, such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, and oregano, in addition to providing flavor to your meals, may also have immune-boosting properties.

*this information is not a substitute for medical treatment. If you have a serious medical condition or are taking medication, it’s essential to speak with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your health routine.

In the business of the back-to-school season, it’s easy to forget how small daily actions can bolster your family’s health. By incorporating these wellness ideas for keeping school year germs away: prioritizing good sleep, nourishing meals, regular exercise, stress management, and a few immune-boosting supplements when needed, you can create a safety net against those back-to-school germs.  A strong immune system is your best ally in keeping you and your loved ones well. Make these habits a part of your daily routine, especially for you!

Here’s to a healthy and successful school year ahead for both you and your family!
